The Mountain Societies Research Institute (MSRI) generates and applies knowledge to public policy and development practice with the goal of improving the quality of life for people of the mountain areas in Central Asia. The MSRI Background Paper Series strategically identifies research priorities and pathways to application for MSRI’s priority areas. Through structured analysis of the literature, MSRI Background Papers provide an assessment of the state of research in each thematic area as it relates to Central Asian mountain societies, and identify and prioritise knowledge gaps and opportunities for linking research to decision making for policy and practice.
